Sažetak:This volume grew out of our interest in promoting the concept of community, within the study and practice of response to large-scale traumatic events. Partially because of a media that today connects the world and partially because of changes in world politics, technology, and natural circumstances (e.g., global warming), there has been an increase in both the awareness and occurrence of extreme stress events that communities undergo. . . . However, mental health professionals and social scientists have continued to focus on the individual, and not the community. Without losing sight of the individual, our primary goal was to expand the understanding of researchers and interventionists regarding the role of communities in these events. This volume begins by presenting basic areas of importance to stress researchers, establishing these as building blocks for our task of understanding extreme stress. We then examine personal, social, and instrumental resources that have been found to aid adaptation to major stressful circumstances. With this basis formed, we turn to strategies for research and intervention at the community level. We address key community concepts, immediate, mid-term, and long-term responses to war and disasters, and modes of intervention. Our intervention emphasis is on intervention in the broadest sense, including prevention, education, pre and post disaster strategies, and treatment.
